Summary
Did you catch the Workday Commercial that aired during the 2023 Super Bowl?
If that was the moment you took for a bathroom break or get more wings, then you missed one of the coolest commercials they ran. It was a real blast from the past.
The discussion around the four-day work weeks continues to heat up and is being debated. A popular franchise owner is pushing it even further by creating a program that switches to a three-day work week, 14-hour shifts. Here are my 6-reasons why it do not see it working for most of us QSR folks.
The commercial attacks the use of the term “rock star” in the business world and a reflection from various rock icons that it has gone too far. Software company, Workday’s Super Bowl spot, featured actual rock stars to make the point.
The 60-second commercial, features Ozzy Osbourne, Paul Stanley, Gary Clark Jr., Joan Jett and Billy Idol as they each showcase what it takes to be a true Rock star.
Here is the breakdown:
Paul Stanley from KISS (my favorite band of all time) who is on stage in front of a huge crowd, turns to the audience, saying, “Hey, corporate types. Will you stop calling each other rock stars?” before two men in suits sitting in their office complement each other with the term “you are a rock star”. Paul Stanley comes back with, “Rock Stars, Please!” (Queue the eye roll)
Next, you see Joan Jet asking, “Do you know what it takes to be a rock star?”
Then Billy Idol boasts that he has trashed hotel rooms in 43 countries … while standing in a completely trashed hotel room.
Next, Joan Jett walking into a performance says, “I was on the road since I was 16.”
Then Ozzy Osbourne, sitting in front of his pool, says, “I have done my share of bad things, also your share of bad things.” Haha, I loved that from the Prince of Darkness!
Then Paul Stanley and Gary Clark Jr, continue to badger, “just because you’re good at your job, that doesn’t make you a Rock Star”.
Next, you see Ted in Finance on stage, with the crowd cheering, “Ted-Ted-Ted” as Ozzy makes fun of him, “Oh Ted in Finance you’re a Rock Star.” Next Gary Clark ripping up the guitar and taunting Liz in HR, can you do this?”
Next, you see Ozzy dressed in a plain suit (but retaining the eyeliner and painted fingernails) working in an office, where he introduces himself as Oswald.
Lastly ending at a meeting in a conference room, and just as the presenter goes to call “Pam” a rock star, Paul Stanley stares him down, in total silence. The presenter looks down, “I wasn’t going to say it.”
This commercial is directing its tone toward Fortune 500 Companies, but what about the rest of us? What about the Hospitality Industry? Restaurant and Retail employees that do an incredibly hard job every day? The ones that are by the time the Corporate world starts showing up for work, we have already been working for 4, 5 hours, or even more.
OUR ROCKSTARS DON’T ALL HAVE GUITARS OR SUITS ON
The term “Rockstar” in the workplace typically refers to someone who is exceptional at their job and makes a significant impact on the team or the organization as a whole. Many factors contribute to being considered a rock star in the workplace, including:
Being a consistent performer
Someone who is consistently performing at a high level and producing high-quality work will be recognized as a Rockstar. They exceed expectations and consistently deliver results.
Strong work ethic
A Rockstar in the workplace demonstrates a strong work ethic and dedication to their job. They go above and beyond what is expected of them, often putting in extra effort to get the job done right. They do the unsexy, many times boring things well.
Strong communication skills
A Rockstar in the workplace has strong communication skills, communicates effectively, and collaborates well with others. They are able to work well in a team and build strong relationships with co-workers, leadership, and customers.
Are problem solvers
A Rockstar in the workplace brings new ideas and approaches to the table and is not afraid to take risks and try things. They are innovative and creative, think on their feet, finding new or better ways to solve problems and achieve goals.
Are not victims
Too often, the moral majority doesn’t take ownership or responsibility when they have a problem. They simply pass the responsibility onto leadership, and it becomes leadership’s concern to now figure out. Rockstars don’t do this, they come up with solutions or have already executed the solution and then make leadership aware of the actions they took.
Have absolute Leadership potential
A Rockstar in the workplace demonstrates leadership potential and is frequently seen as a role model for others. They inspire, lead by example and motivate their colleagues, and are respected by their peers and superiors.
ROCKSTARS AREN’T BORN, THEY ARE MADE
How many times have you seen people looking at the man or woman driving by in the fancy car, and the person you are with says, “Oh, must be nice” or “They are lucky”.
#@$% your Lucky bulls***!!!! GET THAT?
They aren’t lucky, they have rolled up their sleeves to put in hard work and often endured a lot of stress. They have been consistent over and over, and failed over and over until they made headway and became successful.
So it’s not luck at all. Do NOT take that hard work away from them!
SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DO WHAT UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DON’T DO AND DON’T WANT TO DO
They worked while others slept late.
They took risks when others played it safe.
They did what others were unwilling to do.
That’s why they are successful, driving a fancy car!
You’re just seeing the result after years, and you’re envious of the end result but want to skip all the hard important stuff in the middle.
In the movie the Shawshank Redemption, Morgan Freeman gave a description of Geology. He said, “It’s the science of time and pressure.” That is how a diamond is formed. Time and pressure.
So there is only one way to manufacture a Rockstar other than time and pressure.
The Rockstar Journey.
I have spent years developing a system that does exactly that, DEVELOPS ROCKSTARS.
It’s a Journey, but in the hospitality industry it’s a journey to becoming a Rockstar.
The Retail and Restaurant industry is hard, it’s tough, and often unforgiving. That is why to achieve a status like Rockstar in this industry you’re truly a badass like:
Ozzy Osbourne, Paul Stanley, Gary Clark Jr., Joan Jett, and Billy Idol and everything that they endured all those years. They can say whatever they want, they are the standard!
They are truly Rockstars!
